BWI HISTORY & MISSION
Babywearing International is a non-profit organization. Their primary goal is to promote babywearing as a universally accepted practice that benefits both the child and the caregiver, through education and support.
A group of babywearing educators came together through the website, thebabywearer.com and decided the babywearing community would benefit from a parent organization. The founders wanted to support the ever growing number of babywearers around the world. In 2008 BWI affiliated it's first four babywearing groups located in Chicago, Central New York, Birmingham, and the Bay Area.
The organization has grown exponentially and now has more than 105 chapters in the United States and anticipates adding international chapters in the future.
All chapters are volunteer led by Chapter Support Volunteers (CSVs), Volunteer Babywearing Educators (VBEs), Advanced Babywearing Educators (ABEs), and Master Babywearing Educators (MBEs). CSVs handle non-educational tasks such as administrative duties. VBEs are entry level educators that have a basic knowledge of different styles of carriers as well as how to babywear safely. ABEs are mid level educators with advanced babywearing knowledge and skills. MBEs are at the highest level of accreditation and are expected to take on significant leadership rolls within the national organization.
WHY I BABYWEAR...
"I babywear because it allows me to comfort my son while simultaneously doing the dishes!"
Tiffany A.
“To meet the needs of both my children, the closeness (the snuggles when babywearing are like none other), ease of breastfeeding, to contain my mobile BOY who is now into EVERYTHING (lol), the community, the awesome carriers and beautiful textiles, to keep up my skills so I can in turn help other caregivers to wear their babies, I could go on and on..."
Krista K.
"I love the closeness. Also all the smiles and compliments I get from mothers and even some dads that see me babywearing."
